In 802 AD Jayavarman2 decleared  himself king which marked the beginnig of the Khmer Empire for over 600 years. The empire's center of power was Angkor, where a series of capitals and temples was constructed. Angkor was the largest city in the world with an urban spranl of 1,150 square miles. The city supported a population of up to one milion people.
